The occasional thoughts of Monique Happy, the brain behind Winlock Press.
- I love the Arctic as only a Southern Californian can
I’ve lived in Southern California for years, and let me tell you, the weather here … it’s rough. Sometimes it gets up into the high 90’s. Some nights, believe it or no, it plunged down into the low 50’s. Even the 40’s. Yeah, I know.
Seriously, though, snow on the ground and bitter cold is a distant memory for me personally. Which makes it especially weird that so many of our recent books – and some of our best-sellers – are stories that take place in some of the coldest terrain on earth: Alaska and the Arctic circle.
It started with Craig Martelle’s End Times Alaska series, our best-selling books in 2016. It’s set in a very cold world after nuclear bombs fall and the invasion begins, and there’s so much snow and ice around it actually makes you turn up the heat while you’re reading. Then, totally by coincidence, I was contacted by another great writer of action and adventure from the frozen north, Basil Sands. He had a loosely connected series of books that began with 65 Below. Now, suddenly, we’re got half a dozen very cold books on our list, with more to come.
Yes: There’s a new End Times Alaska slated for this month, and Sands’ Ice Hammer: Invasion just came out. There are more arriving from him, too, as early as January.
The harsh climate and terrain of Alaska and the Northern Territories makes an excellent environment for tough, tough stories of heroism, high adventure, and high-stakes drama. I couldn’t be happier about all the time we get to spend up where the snowfall is deeper than I am tall. But I admit it: I like reading all these great books from the cozy confines of my Southern California home, where “preparing for winter” means adding a second blanket to the bed, and not much more.
Stay warm out there!
- Wow, have we been busy around here.
I thought I’d tell you a little bit about what we’ve been up to.
It’s hard to believe that Winlock Press is about to celebrate its second anniversary, but here we are. And everything has changed. We started out focusing just on zombies and post-apocalypse fiction. We found some great authors, sold thousands (no kidding: thousands) of books … and then we got restless.
To be honest, I love a good zombie or TEOWAWKI story – who doesn’t? – but I like a lot of other genres as well. Supernatural Romance. Straight mysteries and thrillers. Hard SF like Star Wars, Starship Troopers and The Expanse.
So we’re branching out. We spent most of 2016 finding even more great authors – some brand new, some who’ve already made a mark as independent creators – across the genres. And now, finally, they’re starting to be published. The new look to our website is part of that expansion. Look at all those categories! Look at all those new titles!
I decided the best thing I could do was find books that I really liked – ones that I knew readers like you would love no matter what genre they inhabit.
And I decided that I wanted to talk more directly to Winlock fans, at least once in a while. So I’ll be dropping little messages here in “Mo Words” to let you know what we’re up to and what’s coming next. New authors, new promotions, audio books – all kinds of things.
2017 is going to be an exciting year. Hang around and join the fun. Oh, and write to me here, too. I want to know what you think of the new titles, the new website, and the expanded line!
Have a good one,
